Knitted home accessories

There is no doubt that knitted patterns go the best with natural wood. Together they create an amazing warm ambient that everyone will define as the ideal home.

With these knitted home decorations you can create a warm and cozy atmosphere in your home. The fun leg warmers for chairs (image above) are from Etsy shop Biscuit Scout. The beautiful bamboo basket with crocheted top is made in Guatamala and it is available from Diggs.

This hand knitted baby blanket is made up of twenty-four individual squares which are then sewn together to create the leaf and diamond design. A narrow crocheted stripe in a variegated green, lavender and cream color sets off the outer border of crocheted scallops to create a beautiful finished edge. The soft lavender color is equally suitable for a baby boy or girl. In addition to keeping baby warm, its gentle color and interesting texture would make a wonderful photo prop. Melanie Porter, Hand-knit your home !

After 10 years working as a knitwear designer for a number of international fashion brands, in 2008 Melanie Porter turned her expertise to furniture, creating one-off contemporary designs from antiques sourced at auctions and markets across the UK.

Trained at the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College, Melanie’s ability to create exquisite, textured fabrics which are individually knitted and felted for every project has drawn attention from clients and press all over the world.

First time I meet Melanie Porter was 2 years ago at the London Design Festival 2011. Her exhibition booth was by far one of the best in terms of creativity and color. She was extremely friendly and happy to share her work with all those who paid attention to her designs. I remember that the first question that I've asked was: how long does it take you to knit an armchair ( it was one of her famous Union Jack that I was pointing to ) and I was surprised to hear that it was about a week worth of time. I was imagining at least half a year for that wonderful piece! Then I was curious if she was working on her own or if she gets help from time to time and her answer was unexpected saying that her mum was helping her just with buttons and maybe small accessories like flowers. I could sense there a trace of regret in her voice but that was quickly waved with a funny remark that her partner shares his live with her and the yarn and needles.

At that time she was not as famous as she is now but she had this passion to transform existing furniture into cheerful handmade upholstered work of art. Who would have thought that she was going to exhibit soon in the main window of Natuzzi store in TCR and also open her own brand shop?

Wednesday 22nd August 2012, FTCT were beneficiary for a very special, ‘Jubilee & Olympic’ themed auction, hosted by chic Italian interiors company Natuzzi, at their Tottenham Court Road Store. Up for grabs was a unique King sofa and two Queen Chairs, both covered in bespoke hand-knitted Union Jack fabric, designed by London based knitwear and interiors designer, Melanie Porter."

Melanie undertakes the entire process herself and everything, from the restoration and upholstering to the individual, crocheted buttons, is done by hand. The result of this incredibly labour-intensive process is a stunning and unique work of art, destined to be a future family heirloom.

Melanie’s work is now sold at outlets worldwide including Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Wolf & Badger in London.

Knitted toys at Liberty London

Today I have visited one of my favorite department stores in London: Liberty. It has always been a pleasure to see the beautiful old building and take in all the latest arrivals in fashion and design. For all of you that are passionate about furniture design, decorating,  art and craft in general, I highly recommend you to go up to the 3rd and 4th floors where you can find many incredible and unique pieces. From exclusive Indian carpets and God's statues to Scandinavian furniture pieces, each room has something sophisticated and unique that will catch your attention.
The one area that has interested me in particular was the knitting section on the 3rd floor. Unfortunately I didn't find any specific piece of knitted furniture but I did find some amazing knitted toys and accessories for kids rooms! The prices were not what you will call average, but they made sense considering that we are talking about handmade toys. I will let you decide once you will visit :)

Habitat knitted footstools

Today I have entered the Habitat store in TCR. I was in the area and I thought to have a look inside and see what they've got new in terms of accessories. They are mainly popular because of their affordable accessories and I have always loved good bargains. I must say that I am surprised that they have improved a lot in the last months in terms of collection and the way they display the items in the store now. It used to be a mess back in the days... 

One of the things that caught my eyes right from the entrance was the blue knitted footstool that was nicely displayed together with a nice bright yellow sofa ( you can enjoy my snapshot of it here ).

I was happy to see that my passion for knitted furniture and home deco is in trend now! ;) I have took some more photos of the knitted items that I have found in there and I think that they have done a great job! Well done Habitat! :)
